Make Your Voice Heard on Electoral Reform
The Liberals are trying to change how we elect our members of parliament and we need your support to stop them.
Canada has one of the oldest and most effective voting systems in the world – “first past the post” ("FPTP"). This means the candidate with the highest number of votes in a riding gets elected to the House of Commons. It is by far the easiest system to understand, and the simplest to administer. Voters mark an “X” on the ballot for the candidate they prefer. The candidate with the highest number of votes is elected. Every single vote counts.
There is really no reason to change our system. We enjoy perhaps the most stable democracy in the entire world. The bribery, corruption and bloodshed that exist elsewhere is noticeably absent in Canada. People can peacefully visit a polling station and vote in an election without fear of violence.
So why does Justin Trudeau want to change our system? Simple – he wants to ensure the Liberals remain in power forever. They consider themselves to be “Canada’s natural governing party” and they want to rig the system to ensure they are.
We need your help to tell Justin Trudeau that Canadians are happy with our current system just the way it is. There is no need to change a system that works – one that has worked since Canada became a nation.
- We prefer a simple system
- We prefer a system where it is clear who wins and who doesn’t
- We prefer a system where we vote for an actual person that will be accountable to the people they represent, not for an unaccountable and faceless political party
- Most importantly, we refuse to allow a Liberal party with 39% popular support to unilaterally change how our members of parliament are elected. How we elect our representatives is the most fundamental element of democracy, and the only way to change the system is to do so democratically – with a national referendum.
We want every Canadian to have a say, despite Justin Trudeau’s refusal to hold a referendum.
Have your say!
Complete the government of Canada's electoral reform survey and demand they leave our system alone. If they proceed with a new model, demand they give every Canadian their democratic right to vote on it in a national referendum. This survey is open until October 7th so be sure to complete it early.
Together we can make a difference and keep democracy where it belongs – with Canadians (and not with the Liberal party).
